this started out as “bad guy vs. good guy”, but here you realize this whole fight is just a spat between two boys who made a choice that haunted them forever and here they’re dealing with the consequences and it’s just so fucking brutal watching them beat the shit out of each other because it’s not about killing the other anymore–it never was–because why waste time punching him when you can just grab the remainder of your blade and stick it into his heart right there and then?

takasugi just keeps punching because that’s the only way he knows to get rid of the agony, of the pain of remembering, because he doesn’t want to remember gintoki’s face, because that hurts too much, because for everything he says, he knows, he KNOWS why gintoki did it and he knows why he aches because he knows what HE would have done and he hates it, he hates that he would have made the same choice, and he hates gintoki for making that choice and he hates the world for making him gintoki make that choice and it just isn’t fair–it just isn’t fair–that gintoki had to take up that burden, that shoyou had to die at the hands of his student, that they fought a whole war to save their sensei, only to kill him with their own hands because they were too weak, and oh god, why were they so weak, they were just boys, they were supposed to save him, why did it end up like this, it’s been 10 years and takasugi still doesn’t have the answer, and he doesn’t know if he ever will, and he doesn’t know if he ever wants the answer, so he’ll just keep destroying, and he’ll get revenge for sensei, and he’ll swing his fists down at the enemy, and he’ll throw a punch and another punch and another and another and another and

takasugi vs. gintoki is my favorite fight of anything ever.
